Funder: Foundation for Innovative new Diagnostics (FIND) Geneva, Switzerland

Amount of funding: US$ 129,440.00

Duration:  2 years (January 2009-December 2010)

Team composition Principal Investigator: Jean-Charles Sanchez

Team Leader Uganda: Professor John C.K. Enyaru

Co-Investigator Uganda: Dr. Enock Matovu

Collaboration: Research collaboration between Makerere University, Uganda, and University of Geneva, Switzerland

Objectives:   i.  Evaluate by ELISA the level of GSTP and H-FABP in the plasma and CSF of three independent, retrospective cohorts encompassing a total of 400 stage I and stage II subjects,         ii.  Evaluate by bead arrays the level of IL-1ra, Il-9, G-CSF, IP-10, MIP-1beta and VEGF in the above cohorts,         iii.  Evaluate by proteomics strategies (2-DE, TMT isobaric labelling and mass spectrometry) the CSF of stage I and stage II HAT patients (n=6).

Contribution to Makerere University Equipment: Liquid nitrogen storage tanks, 2 computers, Molecular reagents and Plastic ware Development of differential diagnostic technique for sleeping sickness patients
