The programme is based on a credit unit system in which:

1 lecture hour (LH) = 1 contact hour (CH)

2 tutorial hour (TH) = 1 contact hour (CH)

2 hours of practical = 1 contact hour; 4 hours of field work = 1 contact hour

15 contact hours (1 CH per week for 15 weeks) = 1 credit unit (CU)

8.0 EXAMINATION REGULATIONS

8.1 University Examinations

The general regulations and statutes of Makerere University and the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies shall govern examinations for the degree of Master of Science in Biochemistry.

8.2 Progressive Assessment (PA)

Progressive assessment shall consist of practicals, tests, assignments, presentations, fieldwork reports etc. Progressive assessment will contribute 40% to the final course unit mark.

8.3 Course Examinations

At the end of each semester there will be an examination in all the courses offered during the first year. Progressive assessment shall contribute 40 %, while the end of semester examination shall contribute 60 % to the final examination mark. The pass mark in any course is 60 %.

 8.4 Grading System

Each course shall be graded out of a maximum of 100 marks and assigned appropriate letter grades and grade points (GP) as follows:

These additional letters shall be used where appropriate:

WP = Withdrawn from the programme with a pass;

F = Withdrawn with a failure;

I = Incomplete;

AUD = Audited course only.

The pass grade point for each course shall be 3.0.
